Cannabis was originally a traditional herb in Thailand, commonly used in cooking and as a component in Thai traditional medicine recipes. It had been widely utilized for generations until it was banned following the 1961 United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. As a result, cannabis became illegal in Thailand, and anyone who cultivated or used it was subject to criminal penalties.
This led Thai people to stop cultivating and using cannabis, causing traditional knowledge about cannabis to disappear. Although some small-scale underground cultivation and use persisted, there was no room for public or systematic development of cannabis knowledge in Thailand.

Meanwhile, several countries abroad have continued to research and develop cannabis extensively. Numerous scientific studies have shown that cannabis can be used to create medicines for conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s, Tourette syndrome, psoriasis, and many others — especially those that modern medicine cannot effectively treat.
With this global trend, the public and various organizations began to explore the use of cannabis in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. In Thailand, the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine has also started producing traditional Thai medicines using cannabis, such as “Metta Osot” and “Karun Osot”.

To achieve medical-grade cannabis, it must be cultivated in high-quality, climate-resistant greenhouses that prevent contamination from pests, heavy metals in soil and water, and other harmful elements. Cannabis plants absorb minerals very efficiently, so a strict and controlled environment is essential.
Long-term cannabis cultivation requires extensive knowledge, scientific research, skilled agricultural personnel, funding, time, and genuine commitment to succeed in producing safe, effective cannabis for medical use.

The Phuket Herbal and Wellness Tourism Community Enterprise recognized the importance of these issues. Equipped with the required knowledge, funding, time, and strong determination, the enterprise aims to grow cannabis that meets medical standards — contributing the product to the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine for the benefit of patients. The remaining crops can also generate revenue to support operations.
To formalize this, the enterprise entered into a collaborative agreement with the Department to produce cannabis for medical purposes. All harvested cannabis flowers are delivered to the department for use in traditional medicine formulations such as Metta Osot, Karun Osot, and other registered remedies.
